Diaspora Engagement in Education: Financing and Mentoring the Next Generation – UK–Africa Summit 2025

Mobilising Knowledge and Capital from Abroad

Africa’s success story is not just on the continent. As a diaspora of more than 170 million people globally, African people are a force of change. Beyond their remittances, they bring knowledge, mentorship, skills, and investment funds, which can revolutionize Africa’s agricultural and educational sectors.

At the 15th UK–Africa Business Summit 2025, stakeholders will explore how diaspora capital can be channelled into sustainable initiatives that strengthen human capital, build resilient education systems, and support agricultural innovation.

The Contribution of Diaspora towards Transformative Education
Remittance and Educational Investment Financing: Remittances from the diaspora add up to well over $95 billion annually. Increasing amounts of such funding fund diaspora-sponsored schools, education trusts, and scholarships which help mold future leaders.
Mentorship and Knowledge Transfer: Established diaspora professionals are establishing virtual mentorship pipelines, advising African students and businesspersons in the field of STEM, agribusiness, and digital entrepreneurship.
EdTech Ventures of Diaspora Origin: Companies established outside are coming home, opening up virtual classrooms, AI-based centers of tutorial instruction, and centers of certification which bring education within the reach of rural people.

Mobilizing Diaspora Capital into Sustainable Ventures
Education-focused Diaspora Bonds and Funds: Governments and financial institutions are crafting education-focused diaspora bonds, raising funds for school infrastructure, teacher education, and digital literacy.
Public-Private-Diaspora Partnerships (PPDPs): A different kind of partnership model engages governments, investors, and diaspora organizations in co-financing education centers, vocational training facilities, and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)-oriented
Going Beyond Philanthropy: Diaspora giving is transforming into sustained investment, producing social outcomes alongside medium- to longer-term financial gains by building the future workforce of Africa.

The Summit as a Platform for Diaspora Engagement
The UK–Africa Summit 2025 will bring into focus the potential of diaspora communities co-creating solutions with African governments and British investors. Key priorities are:

  • Showcasing diaspora-led EdTech and agritech ventures.
  • Structuring investment vehicles to channel diaspora capital at scale.
  • Increasing exchanges of mentorship and training between the UK and Africa.
  • To connect education and agricultural curricula with labour market needs via UK–Africa–diaspora links.

By positioning the diaspora as a strategic development partner, the Summit ensures that knowledge and capital from abroad are harnessed not just for short-term gains, but for long-term, systemic transformation.
