Dr. Ilona Karpanos Highlights the Role of SMEs in International Trade at UK-Africa Trade Summit
London, September 15, 2024 — At the 14th UK-Africa Annual Trade Summit, Dr. Ilona Karpanos, International Trade Advisor at the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, delivered a powerful address emphasizing the pivotal role Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play in driving international trade. She highlighted the challenges SMEs face when entering foreign markets and outlined the support needed to help them succeed, particularly in East Africa.
Dr. Karpanos began by acknowledging that SMEs are the backbone of many economies, driving growth and innovation. However, she stressed that SMEs often encounter significant barriers when attempting to expand into international markets. These include complex regulatory frameworks, limited market knowledge, and access to financing.
"SMEs are engines of growth, but they face unique challenges when entering foreign markets," she said. She added that these obstacles can be particularly difficult for businesses entering unfamiliar regions like East Africa, where understanding local regulations and market dynamics is essential for success.
To address these challenges, Dr. Karpanos emphasized the critical role of chambers of commerce in supporting SMEs. The Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce provides resources like market research, training programs, and networking opportunities to help businesses understand market entry requirements and develop effective strategies.
"Chambers of commerce are key players in equipping SMEs with the tools they need to succeed in international trade," she stated. She urged SMEs to take advantage of the support offered, noting that the right assistance can help them overcome hurdles and thrive in global markets.
Dr. Karpanos identified specific sectors in East Africa where SMEs have significant growth potential, including FinTech, manufacturing, and biotechnology. These industries are rapidly evolving and offer vast opportunities for SMEs and investors alike.
"FinTech is transforming financial services in East Africa, manufacturing is growing at a rapid pace, and biotechnology is making strides in healthcare and agriculture," she said. By focusing on these sectors, SMEs can capitalize on East Africa’s economic growth and innovation.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Karpanos encouraged businesses to leverage the resources of the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce to facilitate smoother expansion into African markets. She emphasized that with the right support, SMEs could play a transformative role in enhancing UK-East Africa trade relations.
"By tapping into the potential of SMEs, businesses can access new markets, create jobs, and drive economic growth in East Africa and beyond," she concluded, urging more companies to explore the opportunities that the region offers.
