Dr. Joseph Warui Showcases Kenya’s Strategic Role as East Africa’s Investment Hub at UK-Africa Summit
London, September 15, 2024 — At the UK-Africa Business Summit, Dr. Joseph Warui, Deputy High Commissioner of Kenya to the United Kingdom, showcased Kenya as a dynamic investment hub in East Africa. He highlighted the country’s economic resilience, strategic location, and diverse sectors, positioning Kenya as a gateway to the broader African market for foreign investors.
Kenya has sustained robust economic growth, with an average GDP growth rate of over 5% in recent years. Dr. Warui emphasized that Kenya’s diverse economy spans agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, finance, and technology, sectors that offer significant investment opportunities for international businesses. This economic diversity has made Kenya one of the fastest-growing economies in East Africa.
Kenya’s geographical location offers a major advantage for investors. As a member of the East African Community (EAC), Kenya provides access to over 250 million consumers, making it an ideal entry point into East Africa. Dr. Warui also highlighted Kenya’s role in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which offers expanded opportunities for investors to tap into one of the world’s largest free trade zones.
Kenya has enacted various policies to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), including tax incentives, streamlined regulatory procedures, and guarantees against expropriation. Dr. Warui also emphasized Kenya’s significant investment in infrastructure, with ongoing projects to expand ports, roads, railways, and airports, improving connectivity and making the country a regional transport and logistics hub.
Kenya boasts a young, skilled, and educated workforce, with over 35% of the population under the age of 35. This dynamic labor pool is highly adaptable, providing businesses with a strong human capital base, particularly in sectors like technology and innovation. Kenya’s high literacy rate and widespread English proficiency further enhance its appeal to foreign businesses.
Dr. Warui highlighted several sectors ripe for investment, including:
Dr. Warui concluded by reinforcing Kenya’s strategic importance as the gateway to East Africa, offering investors access to one of the world’s fastest-growing regions. He invited UK businesses to explore Kenya’s diverse investment opportunities and expressed optimism about the future of UK-Kenya partnerships.
Kenya is the largest and most advanced economy in East and Central Africa, with a GDP accounting for over 50% of the region’s total. Supported by an emerging middle class and an increasing demand for high-value goods and services, Kenya’s stable economy and vibrant democracy provide a solid foundation for international business.
Kenya is at the forefront of sustainability, with 93% of its energy sourced from renewable energy. The country is a pioneer in green bonds and aims to reduce carbon emissions by 32% by 2030. These initiatives position Kenya as a leader in Africa’s green economy transition.
Kenya’s young population, with 70% under the age of 35 and a literacy rate of 82%, is highly skilled and proficient in English, making it an attractive destination for investors seeking a dynamic and capable workforce.
Kenya guarantees constitutional protection of private property and non-discrimination for investors, with 100% profit repatriation allowed. Investors are protected by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration, ensuring a secure and fair business environment.
Kenya’s geopolitical significance is reinforced by its role as the host of the UN’s African Headquarters and its past membership in the UN Security Council. The country’s logistics infrastructure, coupled with its stable political environment, positions Kenya as a vital hub for regional and international business.
