Explore IT and Fintech Opportunities at UKAIS 2026

Uganda’s digital economy is moving from basic connectivity into payments, fintech, e-commerce, digital public services and platform-led trade. UKAIS 2026 gives investors and operators a focused route to assess where digital infrastructure, capital and commercial execution can support Uganda’s next growth phase.

Uganda’s technology and fintech story is no longer only about mobile money. It is becoming a broader digital economy opportunity linked to payments, trade, public services, financial inclusion, data systems, agritech, e-commerce and digital infrastructure.

This aligns directly with UKAIS 2026. The summit programme includes Energy Transition & Digital Africa, with a dedicated track on Digital Infrastructure & Fintech.

The Digital Economy Case

GSMA reported that digital policy reforms could connect 4 million more Ugandans to the internet, create 1.79 million new jobs, and generate UGX 14.6 trillion in additional economic value by 2030.

Fintech Is the Immediate Opportunity

MTN Uganda’s 2025 performance shows the scale of the market. The company reported fintech revenue of UGX 1.11 trillion, mobile money revenue of UGX 1.09 trillion, and processed 5 billion mobile money transactions worth UGX 195.5 trillion.

The platform was supported by 14.7 million active fintech users, 241,000 agents and about 114,800 merchants. This is not a small payments market. It is a major digital financial infrastructure layer.

Capital Markets and Fintech Maturity

Reuters reported that MTN Uganda plans to separate its mobile money and fintech unit into a standalone company, with an ambition to list the business on the Uganda Securities Exchange within three to five years.

That signals a maturing fintech sector, clearer valuation logic and a potential capital markets pathway for digital finance assets.

Digital Credit and Regulation

Digital credit is also growing quickly. Monitor reported, based on Bank of Uganda data, that mobile money loan disbursements rose from UGX 1.66 trillion to UGX 3.5 trillion in the 12 months to June 2025.

This points to strong demand for small-ticket credit, but it also raises important questions around consumer protection, credit scoring, default risk and regulatory oversight.

Where the Strongest Opportunities Sit

Policy and Data Governance

Uganda’s Ministry of ICT has highlighted the Digital Transformation Roadmap 2024–2028 and Digital Uganda Vision 2040 as guiding frameworks for digital growth, connectivity, e-government and inclusive digital services.

Uganda is also working on a National Data Strategy to support responsible data use, innovation, governance and economic growth. For fintech, digital credit, AI, healthtech and agritech, data governance will shape credit scoring, customer protection, interoperability, digital identity and platform regulation.

Investor Watchpoints

The investment case is strong, but it is not frictionless. Investors must assess interoperability, taxation, licensing, consumer protection, cybersecurity, data governance, agent network economics and platform concentration.

Uganda has scale, but scale alone does not make a fintech proposition investable. The winning models will be those that solve real payment, credit, trade or distribution problems with clear regulatory discipline.

How UKAIS 2026 Connects This

UKAIS 2026 is structured around capital deployment, market entry, sector dialogue, B2B matchmaking, capital access clinics and deal-focused engagement.

Its digital and fintech content connects payment systems, financial rails, digital trade and platform growth to wider themes of production, exports and industrial development.

Strategic take: Uganda’s digital economy opportunity is no longer just telecom growth. It is financial infrastructure, merchant payments, digital lending, trade platforms, agritech and data-led services.

The strongest investment opportunities will sit where fintech supports real economic activity: trade, agriculture, SME finance, logistics, remittances and consumer payments.
