Phillip Kakuru Urges Global Investors to Explore Uganda’s Trade Potential at UK-Africa Business Summit

London, September 15, 2024 — At the 14th UK-Africa Business Summit, Phillip Kakuru, a distinguished entrepreneur and South African Diaspora representative, delivered a compelling address on the vast economic opportunities in Uganda. Speaking to a global audience, Kakuru emphasized the importance of trade and collaboration between the Ugandan government and private sector in driving the country’s economic growth.

Uganda’s Market Potential: A Gateway to 900 Million Consumers

Kakuru highlighted Uganda’s unique position as a gateway to both the East African and broader African markets. With a domestic market of 300 million consumers and access to an additional 600 million consumers in East Africa, Uganda presents a wealth of opportunities for investors. "Uganda is strategically located to serve as a hub for businesses looking to expand across East Africa," he noted, urging global businesses to explore the untapped potential in sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

Strengthening Uganda’s Global Brand

A key focus of Kakuru’s address was the need to strengthen Uganda’s global brand. He commended both the private sector and government for their efforts in raising awareness about Uganda’s economic potential but stressed that more needs to be done. "We must continue to promote Uganda as a favorable destination for trade and investment," he said, calling on Ugandans at home and abroad to champion the country’s strengths.

Kakuru pointed to agriculture, manufacturing, and services as key sectors ripe for investment, highlighting the role of public-private partnerships in fostering innovation, improving infrastructure, and keeping Uganda competitive in global markets.

A Call for Collaboration Between Government and Business

Kakuru’s message was clear: unity between the government and private enterprises is essential for unlocking Uganda’s full potential. He urged local and international investors to seize the opportunities in Uganda’s fast-growing sectors and emphasized the importance of collaboration in driving innovation and growth.

"Uganda’s youthful and dynamic workforce is a key asset for the country’s future," Kakuru said, expressing optimism about the country’s long-term prospects. He stressed that with the right partnerships, Uganda could harness its market potential and achieve sustained economic progress.

Unlocking East Africa’s Regional Opportunities

Kakuru also spoke of the broader East African region, which he described as a strategic gateway for investors. With a combined population of 600 million consumers, East Africa offers immense potential in trade, technology, and infrastructure development. He urged investors to look beyond Uganda and consider the wider region as a key market for future growth.

"Uganda is well-positioned to become a central hub for business in East Africa," Kakuru said, highlighting the importance of regional integration in driving economic development across the continent.

Conclusion: A Vision for Uganda’s Future

In his closing remarks, Kakuru thanked both the private sector and government for their efforts in promoting Uganda’s global brand and fostering economic growth. He called for continued collaboration, innovation, and investment, stressing that Uganda is poised for a bright economic future. "Now is the time to invest, collaborate, and build a stronger future for Uganda and East Africa," he concluded.

Kakuru’s message at the UK-Africa Business Summit was clear: with Uganda’s growing consumer base and expanding regional opportunities, the country is ready to become a central player in East Africa’s economic development.
