Uganda is taking centre stage in the global investment arena as Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, presents a bold new vision at the 15th UK–Africa Business, Trade & Investment Summit in London: leveraging innovation to become Africa’s most forward-thinking destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Under the theme “Innovations in Foreign Direct Investment: Why Uganda is the Best Destination,” Prof. Nuwagaba will showcase how Uganda is pioneering financial instruments like Diaspora Bonds to attract long-term capital, deepen investor confidence, and reduce reliance on external debt.

Amid rising debt servicing burdens across Africa and growing demand for locally driven solutions, Uganda is shifting the paradigm. The country’s FDI strategy now focuses on:

  • Diaspora Bonds: Enabling Ugandans abroad to invest securely in national infrastructure, agribusiness, and digital services
  • Inclusive Investment Vehicles: Designed to de-risk participation for SMEs and community-based investors
  • Stable Macroeconomic Governance: Anchored by the Bank of Uganda’s strong monetary policy and regulatory oversight
  • Sector-Based Incentives: With targeted investment opportunities in energy, real estate, tourism, and financial services

“Uganda’s diaspora represents not only a vital economic resource but also a strong, enduring connection to our national destiny. Mobilising this potential through Diaspora Bonds is both an innovative and inclusive step forward for Uganda’s future,”
— Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, Deputy Governor, Bank of Uganda

Prof. Nuwagaba will also address the VIP Silver Service Luncheon on 13 September 2025 at the House of Commons, hosted under the patronage of The Rt Hon. Lord Rami Ranger. The event brings together institutional leaders including Lord Dolar Popat, The Commonwealth’s Prof. Luis Franceschi, LCCI CEO Karim Fatehi OBE, and Ruparelia Group Chairman Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, among others.

As Uganda’s central bank, the Bank of Uganda plays a central role in advancing the country’s development vision by promoting stable monetary policy, financial innovation, and investor confidence. The bank’s emphasis on homegrown capital mobilisation, particularly through Diaspora Bonds, demonstrates its commitment to sustainable growth and economic sovereignty.

The UK–Africa Business, Trade & Investment Summit 2025—hosted at The Royal Horseguards Hotel, London—is the UK’s flagship platform for strategic engagement with East and Southern Africa. The event brings together over 500 leaders in finance, trade, infrastructure, and enterprise.
