Tanzania: A Gateway to East Africa | Key Investment Sectors
Speaking at the forum, Mhagama detailed Tanzania’s economic progress, crediting the government’s efforts in regulatory reforms and stakeholder engagement to improve the business environment. “Our country’s young and dynamic population, combined with strategic access to East and Southern African markets, makes Tanzania a promising investment destination,” he stated.
Key sectors highlighted for investment included:
Tanzania’s commitment to infrastructure development is seen in major projects like the US$3 billion Nyerere Hydro Electric Dam, which will produce over 2,000 megawatts of power, ensuring affordable and reliable electricity. Additionally, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), linking Dar es Salaam Port with Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the DRC, is expected to reduce cargo transport costs by 40%, significantly enhancing trade efficiency.
As a member of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and with preferential trade agreements such as AGOA with the USA, Tanzania offers unparalleled access to the East African Community (EAC) and SADC markets, alongside partnerships with China, India, Japan, and the EU.
Under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania is committed to opening up to the global economy through legal and regulatory reforms. The government has simplified tax regimes, automated investment procedures, and removed barriers to business growth, making the country a top destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
“We invite the global investment community to explore the remarkable opportunities Tanzania offers. Whether it’s in agriculture, mining, or tourism, we are committed to partnering with investors to foster economic growth and development,” Mhagama concluded.
Tanzania’s ongoing economic transformation, strategic location, and commitment to sustainable development make it an attractive hub for global investors aiming to tap into the East and Southern African markets.
