Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa Advocates for UK Diaspora Dialogue at UK-Africa Summit

The UK-Africa Trade Summit concluded with a strong focus on East Africa’s role in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. Saudi Commercial Attaché Abdullah Almasoud discussed key investments in tourism, renewable energy, and services that will fuel regional development.

A Call for Dialogue with the Diaspora

The Minister acknowledged the challenges many Ugandans in the UK face and urged the government to establish better communication and support mechanisms for the diaspora. Drawing inspiration from the success of the Uganda North American Association (UNAA) in the United States, she called for similar efforts in the UK. Specifically, she proposed a dedicated session to address the concerns of Ugandans abroad, ensuring that the relevant ministries could work collaboratively to provide practical solutions.

"I would like to see a session here where we listen to the challenges our brothers and sisters in the UK are facing, mobilize relevant ministries, and provide solutions," she stated. The Minister expressed her commitment to working closely with the Ugandan Embassy in London to turn this vision into reality.

Strengthening Cultural Connections

Beyond the practicalities, the Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining strong cultural ties with the diaspora. She expressed a personal desire to gather with Ugandans in the UK to share traditional foods like kalo, ground nuts, matoke, and Uganda Waragi during future visits. This added a personal touch, reflecting her deep connection with the Ugandan diaspora and her commitment to fostering a sense of community among Ugandans living abroad.

Gratitude and Forward-Looking Commitment

In her closing remarks, the Minister expressed gratitude to the summit moderators for creating an environment conducive to dialogue and participation throughout the event. She wished all attendees safe travels, offering a final blessing: "May God bless you all and grant you journey mercies."

Her closing remarks underscored the Ugandan government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by its diaspora, ensuring they remain engaged, supported, and connected to their cultural roots. By focusing on both practical concerns and cultural ties, the Minister reaffirmed Uganda's dedication to strengthening its relationship with Ugandans living abroad.
