East Africa: A Game-Changer for UK Trade – Keith Stokes-Smith’s Vision

Why East Africa Is Key to UK’s Trade Future | Uganda-UK Summit Highlights

At the Uganda-UK Trade Summit 2024, Keith Stokes-Smith, Chair of the Birmingham Commonwealth Association and Director of the African Business Chamber, delivered a powerful address focusing on the untapped potential of East African markets and Birmingham's pivotal role in advancing UK-Africa trade relations. Stokes-Smith called for a renewed commitment from the UK to prioritize East Africa, a region experiencing rapid economic growth yet under-leveraged by UK businesses.

Enhancing UK-East Africa Trade and Investment

Stokes-Smith highlighted a concerning decline in UK trade with Africa, citing a report by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. While Africa's GDP has grown by 20% over the last decade, UK exports to the continent have halved. He stressed the urgency for the UK to reverse this trend and offered several strategic recommendations:

  • UK-Africa Trade Commission: He proposed establishing a joint UK-Africa Trade Commission to streamline trade policies and resolve market access issues, fostering collaboration between the UK and East African businesses.
  • Supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA): By aligning with AfCFTA, the UK could access Africa’s increasingly integrated markets, creating mutual economic benefits.
  • Improving Connectivity and Infrastructure: Stokes-Smith urged for UK-backed infrastructure projects to resolve logistical challenges and boost trade efficiency.
  • Green Energy and Sustainable Development: He identified clean energy as a significant opportunity for UK investment, contributing to both regional development and UK business growth.
  • Simplifying Trade Procedures: Stokes-Smith emphasized the need for streamlined customs procedures and the removal of business visa complexities to facilitate smoother engagement between UK businesses and East Africa.
  • Investing in Education and Vocational Training: A long-term focus on youth and women’s empowerment through education would ensure sustainable economic growth in East Africa.
  1. Birmingham and West Midlands: A Commonwealth Hub for Growth

Stokes-Smith also underscored Birmingham's unique position within the Commonwealth and its potential to become a critical gateway for East African trade. Notably, four East African countries—Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania—are Commonwealth members, providing a natural platform for collaboration.

His vision for Birmingham’s role in East Africa’s growth included:

  • Trade Missions and Investment Summits: Birmingham could lead trade missions and organize investment summits focused on deepening ties with East African businesses.
  • Educational Partnerships: The city’s universities, alongside East African institutions, could drive skill development and knowledge-sharing programs.
  • Sustainable Development Projects: Birmingham’s expertise in renewable energy could support joint projects aimed at addressing climate change while fostering economic growth in the region.
  • Diaspora Engagement: The African diaspora in Birmingham could play a key role in strengthening business ties between the two regions, acting as a bridge for investments.
  • Cultural and Tourism Exchange: Stokes-Smith advocated for increased cultural exchanges, leveraging events like the Commonwealth Games to build closer relationships and unlock new opportunities in tourism and trade.

A Path Forward: Mutual Benefits and Sustainable Growth

In conclusion, Stokes-Smith’s remarks were a clarion call for UK businesses to embrace East Africa’s potential. With its growing economy and increasing integration, East Africa presents a strategic opportunity for the UK. Birmingham and the West Midlands, with their rich Commonwealth ties, stand at the forefront of this renewed partnership.

His speech aligned with the broader goals of the UK-Africa Summit—to serve as a catalyst for stronger trade relations, propelling both regions toward mutual growth and sustainable development. Stokes-Smith concluded by inviting businesses to explore Birmingham as a gateway for collaboration with East Africa.
